From Information to Impact: ESG Summary Infographics

There is no doubt that the communications ecosystem must act immediately to keep up with the fast-evolving narratives in ESG. It’s becoming increasingly necessary to integrate traditional communication channels with newer channels that allow space for more interaction and capture attention in an era where exposure to information is unlimited. Infographics present an extremely valuable tool for summarising ESG initiatives in a compelling visual format. In this article we delve into the impact of infographics and how they are becoming the cornerstone of effective ESG communication.

What is an infographic?

Infographics come in different shapes, various sizes and can be static or interactive. While there isn’t a set design format, the best infographics use striking and engaging visuals combined with text to communicate an idea, insight or information quickly and clearly. The most visually unique, creative infographics are often the most effective because they grab our attention and don’t let go.
Infographics can be used for a range of purposes; education and training, marketing and advertising, reporting, public health and safety and financial services. With the unique ability to turn complex data into visually appealing, easily digestible content, they can be helpful anytime you want to:

The Impact of Infographics

Humans are visual-oriented beings. While written text has an important place in marketing and communications, research suggests that visuals are far more powerful drivers of engagement, retention and conversions and accounts for about 80% of everything we learn.

Understanding the impact of visual content on retention rates and information processing and the design of infographics, makes this communication style a no-brainer when producing annual reports, corporate publications and ESG collateral.

The use of infographics to present your ESG data findings and conclusions can enhance the overall effectiveness of your reporting. Here are some key points highlighting the importance of using visual elements in an infographic:
Enhanced comprehension: Visual elements, such as graphs, charts and illustrations simplified complex information, making it easier for stakeholders to understand the ESG data presented.
Improved retention: By incorporating visual elements, infographics can improve the retention of information, ensuring that the key points are more likely to be remembered by stakeholders and audiences.
Increased engagement: People are naturally drawn to visuals, and the use of color, images and graphics can capture an investor’s attention, encouraging them to spend more time interacting with the information.
Effective data comparison: Infographics often involve the presentation of data sets, comparisons or contrasts. Visual elements can effectively facilitate such comparisons, enabling stakeholders to discern patterns, trends and differences more easily.
Universal understanding: Visual elements transcend language barriers, making infographics a powerful tool for communicating to investors and stakeholders from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Shareability: Infographics that are well-designed and visually appealing are more likely to be shared and distributed widely, especially in the context of social media. Aesthetically pleasing visual elements attract more attention and reach a broader audience.
Storytelling: Visual elements can contribute to the storytelling aspect of an infographic, allowing for a narrative that flow to communicate your ESG story. Combining text and visuals can effectively communicate a compelling story or message.

Creating a Striking Infographic

When it comes to designing an effective infographic, it’s important to create patterns that will enhance the message that we’re trying to communicate. Make use of lines, borders and/or shapes to group related pieces of information together. Include an area for your ESG data, a separate area for conclusions and another for recommendations. This can also be achieved by incorporating contrasting colours to guide your audience’s attention. Pick a bold colour for the important ESG facts and findings and a neutral colour for the less relevant information. Create a text hierarchy with different font styles or sizes. The key to using fonts correctly in infographics is to create a clear text hierarchy with three different font styles–one for the main heading, one for the section headings, and one for the body text. Last but certainly not least, make sure that the focus of your infographic is on visuals like images, symbols, icons, illustrations, and data visualizations like charts and graphs. Visuals are crucial for making your ESG information engaging and your communications memorable.
