Project Overview

Caravel Minerals, an ASX-listed copper exploration company developing the Carajás Copper Project in Western Australia, partnered with The Brand Foundry to create their inaugural sustainability report, a landmark publication that sets new standards for transparent ESG reporting in the Australian mining sector.

As Caravel transitions from exploration to development, they needed more than just a compliance document. They required a powerful communication tool that would authentically demonstrate their commitment to responsible mining, community engagement, and environmental stewardship to investors, Traditional Owners, local communities, and regulatory stakeholders.

Creating a company’s inaugural sustainability report carries unique challenges. Unlike annual updates that can build on established frameworks, a first report must:

Working closely with Caravel’s leadership team, we developed a comprehensive design strategy grounded in The Brand Foundry’s ESG reporting philosophy: transparency first, authentic storytelling, and visual clarity.

Discovery & Research

We immersed ourselves in Caravel’s operations, visiting the Carajás Copper Project site and understanding their stakeholder landscape, from Traditional Owners and local communities to investors and regulatory bodies. This deep dive into their operations, values, and ESG framework enabled us to craft a report that authentically represented their sustainability journey.

Visual Identity Development

The Western Australian landscape became our muse. We developed a design system that celebrates the unique beauty of the project location while maintaining the professional rigor expected of corporate reporting. The iconic eucalyptus tree, representing resilience, local heritage, and environmental stewardship, became a recurring visual motif throughout the report.

Color Palette Strategy

Our earthy, organic color palette reflects both the copper mineralisation and the natural Australian landscape:

Content Architecture

We structured the report around the three ESG pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance, with clear navigation and compelling chapter openers featuring breathtaking landscape photography. Each section balances aspirational messaging with concrete data, measurable targets, and honest acknowledgment of challenges.

Data Visualisation Excellence

Complex ESG metrics were transformed into accessible, scannable infographics. Our highlight spreads featuring key statistics (80% native species retention, zero harm safety record, 3,418 stakeholder engagements, $8.7M economic contributions) allow stakeholders to quickly grasp Caravel’s ESG performance without wading through dense text.

UN SDG Alignment

We created a custom mapping spread showing how Caravel’s operations align with relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating their commitment to global sustainability frameworks while grounding claims in specific, materiality-assessed topics.

Stakeholder-Centric Design

Understanding that the report serves multiple audiences, investors seeking ESG performance data, community members interested in local impact, and regulators requiring compliance demonstration – we ensured intuitive navigation and layered information architecture that serves all stakeholder needs.
